Overview

Departs daily for Full or Half Day trips.  The rapids on the Zambezi River are officially defined as “Grade 5” by the British Canoe Union (Grade 6 being commercially un-runnable). You should be reasonably fit for this activity, as there is a fairly steep walk into & out of the Batoka Gorge as well as the white water rafting activity itself. Tea, coffee & biscuits are served in the morning at check-in, after which you are taken to the Gorge for the safety briefing before the days’ activity commences. Depending on the activity booked, a light lunch is either served in the gorge between rapids (Full Day), or at the top of the gorge (Half Day).

Kayaking equipment: We provide Synergy Fluid Double Kayaks, which also have a centre seat and so can be paddled by one person if needed. They are stable and durable, being made from Polyethylene and they weigh only 33 kg. The kayaks are 3.8 m long and 0.86 m wide, with a carrying capacity of 190 kg. Each kayak has 2 hatches and contains one 15 L “Dry Bag”. There is also a tank well with bungee cord if needed. Each kayak comes standard with a backrest on each seat, which are removable if so desired. Your PDF (personal flotation device) or “life jacket” is a handy ‘one size fits all’ and is a quality make and design. Cobra paddles with aluminium shaft and hard, durable plastic blades, complete the outfit.

Spending money: The tour is almost fully inclusive, so not much spending money is required for extras, besides maybe any spirits or wine required or the whale watching and deep-sea fishing excursions. Madagascar’s currency is the Ariary. Euros are the most practical and convenient currency to exchange into Ariary at the Airport. International credit cards and travellers cheques are very seldom accepted.

First Aid: Our guides are trained in basic first aid and the camps are equipped with a medical aid kit. Preventative Malaria medication should be taken before the trip and throughout its duration, although it is advisable to consult a doctor prior to departure.

Insurance: It is compulsory for all travellers to have insurance covering their personal requirements, medical expenses (including emergency medical evacuation cover) and personal possessions. This is to be arranged before leaving your home country. Jenman Safaris has comprehensive public liability insurance.
