De Hoop is a breathtakingly beautiful nature reserve that is excellent for whale watching as well as some impressive bird watching. A few hours outside of Cape Town, it’s far from the hustle and bustle of city life and has a distinct feeling of remoteness. The absolute stillness was almost a bit strange for a city girl like me, but it was just incredibly beautiful. The property has spectacular views and a lot of history behind it, each unit even has a lovely backstory. One of my highlights was the guided marine walk on the beach, the entire coast of De Hoop is a Marine Protected Area and our guide did a great job explaining the unique inter-tidal ecosystem. The eco-boat cruise on the vlei is ideal for bird enthusiasts. Ostriches, Eland and small plains game roam freely in the nature reserve and even leopards have been spotted. This is my personal recommendation for travellers heading up the Garden Route from Cape Town for a break away from the hustle and bustle of busy towns and to get educational eco-insights along with astonishing views of turquoise blue water, rock pools and white sand dune couplde with old-school farm-style décor in the main house or cabins .
