Surprising my group with an art experience was something I was very much looking forward to on a recent trip to Elephant’s Eye, Hwange. Seeing the look on everyone’s faces when they arrived back at the lodge to easels set up facing the waterhole and drinks waiting was such a wonderful experience. Naturally, the self-conscious nerves set in and everyone mentioned that they were not an artist or had never painted and “I cannot do this…”. But Art of Africa takes you through the motions smoothly with a guided painting class. The guide showed us step by step how to achieve something that we all truly never believed we could have done. It was such an enjoyable experience, and the time flew by with giggles, paint flying and everyone giving cautionary glances to their neighbor just to make sure they were “doing it right”. The outcome was unbelievable, we all painted a beautiful vista, that actually looked like something and not just a bunch of colours on a canvas. We were all so surprised by our artworks and proudly stood by admiring our work! Art of Africa really are one in a million and the art guides are so patient, understanding and brought out the artist in each and every one of us. An experience I will never forget, especially as it is now framed and proudly on display in my living room.
