Nata Bird Sanctuary

Nata Bird Sanctuary

The Nata Bird Sanctuary is home to many species of African mammal wildlife and birdlife; in fact, most of the animals in this protected area are African birds – reinforcing the name of ‘Nata Bird Sanctuary’. Coming to the Nata Bird Sanctuary on Botswana Safari will bring you to the homing grounds for so many birds, including Flamingos, Pelicans, Ducks, Geese, Ostriches, Kingfisher Eagles, Spoon Bills and more. There are about 165 bird species that can be found in the Nata Bird Sanctuary.

The Nata Sanctuary becomes a wonderful paradise for the water-loving birds especially when the Nata River flows into the terrain, making it the perfect water area for the birds. The physical beauty of this area of Botswana is magnificent; many safaris in Botswana list the Nata Bird Sanctuary on the itinerary because it is located on the edge of the Sowa Pan – with almost half of the Nata Reserve itself resting in the pan.  This makes it a particularly important part of the Botswana ecosystem and allows for maximum wildlife concentrated in a relatively small area.

The idea for the Nata Bird Sanctuary was first raised in 1988 by Nata Conservation Committee and four years later the sanctuary was established. The funding for this conservation project came from the Kalahari Conservation Society and a few national and international organizations.  Many local people from the region then helped to relocate about 3500 cattle into the nearby land and after that, they made a network of dusty roads leading to the Nata Bird Sanctuary.  Even though there is an abundance of birds in this sanctuary there is also a variety of mammal wildlife, such as; Antelope, Springhares, Jackals, Foxes, Monkeys and Squirrels. They are also reintroducing Eland, Gemsbok and Zebra. The committee of the Nata Sanctuary is also working hard at creating a permanent waterhole for the animals in the sanctuary.

The Nata Bird Sanctuary is located 170km northwest of Francistown and 20km south of Nata and the eastern tip of the Makgadikgadi Pans. The Nata Bird Sanctuary is the perfect place to stop when you are on a Botswana Safari travelling to Kasane or Maun.   Chat with us if you would like to tailor-make a Botswana Safari that includes the Nata Bird Sanctuary.
