The festive season is fast approaching and while for many of us in the travel industry that usually means exotic trips or some much needed time off, it’s important to think of the less fortunate as well. When people struggle to make ends meet on a day to day basis, a carefree overseas holiday is only a distant dream. For them, we would still like to spread some festive cheer and one of the wonderful ways to do that is through the Santa Shoebox Project. The charitable project that originally started in Cape Town is now in its 11th year and has received a total of 652 180 Santa Shoeboxes for children in that time.
Jenman African Safaris through our responsible tourism initiative, Grow Africa, have joined the festive cheer, with each department putting together a Santa Shoebox to be donated to children in need. It’s not only fun toys that go in the box but also necessary items like a toothbrush and toothpaste, stationary, an educational item, and an outfit.
Each box is directly designated to a specific child and participants receive the name, age, and gender of the child so that they can shop accordingly. Because the gift has a personal aspect people really try their best to find what they think would make the young girl or boy happy.
Once the boxes are filled with the full list of requirements it’s time to wrap them, which is another moment where our staff’s creativity gets a chance to shine! We were all quite proud of our colourful boxes filled to the brim with gifts for the children.
The Santa Shoebox Project will distribute gifts to more than 1000 recipient facilities around South Africa and Namibia. We are very happy to be associated with such a worthy cause and to be able to do our bit to bring some joy to a child during this season of giving.
