Don Pinnock continues his adventure with Jenman East Africa as he visits the “place of elephants”.
We set off early in a Land Rover Disco 3 with, oops, road tyres. Hope they make get us through. First stop was Mingunga Tented Camp, a base to explore Tarangire National Park – the place of two very different kinds of giants: Baobabs and elephants.
The park is a huge area along the eastern edge of the Rift Valley and includes the Maasai Steppe. Being well watered, it’s a dry season refuge for resident and migratory animals and birds. When we arrived elephants were everywhere – in acacia savanna, among dramatic stands of baobabs and along the river.
After flying in from the city with its speed and human clutter, it was like breathing out after holding my breath for way too long. Hello Africa as it once was and should be.
