Bet you didn’t know all of this about honey badgers…

Honey Badger in the Etosha National Park

It’s always difficult to choose a favourite animal, bird or country, but if I had to choose a favourite animal, I would choose the honey badger… It is one of the toughest creatures other there – feisty, fierce and tenacious. Evolution even engineered cheetah cubs to mimic their (honey badgers) black and white colouring, so they will look less like a cheetah…. Animals tend to not attack honey badgers, so evolution was very clever in this regard.

Snakes on a… safari!

Dwarf Adder

Snakes are mostly illusive creatures. They tend to stay out of our way. In the decade that I have been working as a guide at Jenman African Safaris I can count on my ten fingers the amount of snakes I have seen… Especially in winter as they move around even less. That makes it all the more exciting when I get to see one. This time it was a dwarf adder and we were exploring Sesriem canyon in the Namib Desert.

Exploring Namibia

Almost a year in the planning, I should have known things were going to go pear-shaped (we tend to invite Murphy on all our trips…).  It started when the check-list disappeared three days before the trip, but at least we knew where all the necessary documentation was, right?  Passports in hand, documents for the vehicle in the file and all our accommodation booked… and then our son became ill as we left…

A mokoro excursion on the Okavango Delta

I took part in a Jenman Safari from Cape Town to Victoria Falls commencing April 7 & concluding on April 28. It was the trip of a lifetime for me, made more special by the intelligence, professionalism and friendliness of the two guides – Charles & Sam.

We were a small group of 7 at the beginning of the safari, comprised of 5 Australians and 2 Germans…

Southern Skies with Martina - Part 1 17

To all of you,

I can honestly say that my Jenman Safaris Northern Experience overland tour has been for me a once in a lifetime dream come true! It made me see and discover amazing countries, explore so many breath-taking sites and experience beautiful cultures!

By travelling on a safari 4×4 truck, it allowed me to go to incredible remote places that I wouldn’t have been able to see any other way. Every day was a new adventure which developed in me a sense of curiosity as I looked forward to the daily activities.

Nomadic Namibia – a story of discovery and adventure

Dinning area at Terra Africa, Namibia

It’s so very difficult to select just two of the establishments I visited on my recent educational trip to Namibie to review. In only 3 days I visited over 30 lodges, guesthouses, hotels and camps all ranging in standards, sizes and attractions.

1200 photo’s of toilets, beds, balconies and bars; climbing in and out of showers to get the perfect pictures of the bathrooms I soon came to realise Namibie has a huge variety of accommodations all attracting different types of people for different reasons.

On a safari with Maria from Jenman Safaris

We had great plans for the day. We wanted to leave at 7am sharp and be on our way to the Kwando River.

And until 6:30am everything was going according to plan. All the suitcases were ready to be loaded onto the vehicle, the tents had been taken down and all of us had finished breakfast already. The fact that “something” was in the air was ignored by all of us.

Vin and Wendy Piscino from Australia with their donations

When clients Vin and Wendy Piscino came on a Jenman Namibia Lodge Safari in June, little did they know that they would be so moved by their experience, they would go home and make a decision that would change the lives of many people.

Australians Vin and Wendy Piscino had booked their lodge safari of Namibie with no expectations of getting involved with the local people.  Meeting people from different culture groups is just one aspect of an African safari, but this time it had a big impact.  The Himba people of Namibia are exceptionally unique – in their lifestyle, language, customs, dress – virtually everything is different from modern western societies, and they manage to live with very little, in terms of human possessions or resources.

The perfect cheetah kill…

Cheetah chasing it’s prey

Parc national d'Etosha, Namibie is without a doubt one of the most spectacular places on earth. It’s not a very lush area or full of large trees, but it has loads of open space and beautiful grasslands with mopane forest… This is what makes it so great. On these dry plains there are numerous animals and birds to watch as well as large herds of zebra and springbok that roam the plains. We all know that wherever we find plains and animals, we will find the big cats.

On our way through Etosha13 we made friends with the local boys playing soccer and we were happy to promise that we will send their regards to Michael Ballack when we are back in Germany…
At N’kwazi river lodge we had some time to relax and to just put our feet up. We visited the pre school (how many pictures can one take from the these beautiful kids) and we discussed gardening with the women of a local village.
