Our Madagascar Northern Highlights tour offers you a fantastic nature-filled Madagascar vacation option. Explore the Northern part of Madagascar, including national parks with lemurs, reserves with endemic animals and beaches with perfect sand, with Jenman Madagascar Safaris.

Antananarivo – Antananarivo is a city for walking. Some of the most interesting places and views will be chanced upon during leisurely walks – that may climb haphazardly over the hills. Tana is truly a lovely Madagascar vacation destination and spending a few days there will be a great experience!

Montagne d’Ambre National Park – Montagne D’ambre National Park (Amber Mountain National Park) in northern Madagascar is located 35 km from Diégo, in the Antsiranana province, and 1000 km from the capital city. Wander through isolated montane rainforest of 18,200 hectares at an altitude ranging between 800 and 1.475 metres.

Ankarana National Park – Lemurs might be Madagascar’s biggest draw card, but cave-dwelling crocodiles makes Ankarana National Park exceptional. The Ankarana reserve boasts limestone caves, forest-filled canyons and a network of underground rivers. It is said to have the highest density of primates of any forest in the world such as big, green, leaf-tailed geckos, the world’s only known cave-dwelling crocodiles, a good mix of lemur species, and the night active lepilemurs in tree cavities.

Nosy Be – With an area of 321 km2, Nosy Be (‘Big Island’) is the largest of Madagascar’s offshore islands. It’s often billed in tourist brochures as the ‘Ile aux Parfums’ and, like the nearby Comoros islands, is a centre for the production of perfume essence from the ylang-ylang tree. Other island products include sugar cane, coffee, vanilla, pepper, saffron and other spices – making the markets in Nosy Be fantastic and rich with bargains!

We had a great adventure! Everyone was very friendly and promptly on time for our transfers. Our tour guide Franck was awesome!! He was so knowledgeable and had quite an eye for spotting animals. Our highlights were getting to see a lot of lemur species, exploring the bat caves, and relaxing on the beach. We aren’t city folk so we didn’t care too much for the capital, especially being followed around by beggars and vendors. The tipping situation got a little confusing but we were glad the American dollar was so strong over there. Everything was very affordable. Overall, it was a nice mix of culture and comfort. Thank you again, job well done!

The Jenman Safaris Madagascar North (8 day adventure) combines all of the main attractions you’re looking for when visiting Madagascar. The highlights include: hanging lake and waterfall at Montagne de Ambre National Park, Baobab trees, Ankarana Nature Reserve, the tsingy limestone rock formations and hanging bridge, caves, and snorkeling and beautiful beaches in Nosy Be. Most importantly, lemurs abound throughout. We spotted more than 5 different lemur species during our adventure and saw the world’s smallest chameleon up close (smaller than the length of your thumb nail).

Tanikely Marine Park, a day trip from Nosy Be, is a great snorkeling spot frequented by giant green sea turtles that sailed gracefully under me as I bobbed up and down at the water’s surface above the coral reef. Avid scuba divers will not be disappointed! Madagascar is a unique destination, not on most divers’ radar, so it remains relatively untapped. The coral is still in good shape and visibility is great at depth. May is a great time of year to visit the North of Madagascar, although visibility in Nosy Bay (at the water’s surface) is better when it hasn’t been raining.

Rainy season is December through April and typhoon season is January through March when the island pretty much shuts down. Once in Nosy Be for the last two days of the 8 day itinerary, a day trip to Nosy Komba or the Lokobe Nature Reserve are fun activities as is a visit to the craft market in Nosy Be. There’s also a small craft market on Nosy Komba as well as the chance for photography with lemurs that like to jump onto your shoulder and eat fruit from your hand. For boating enthusiasts a live aboard experience to sail around the island is a nice relaxing extension to this great itinerary. Yachts and sailing schooners are available for hire.

The Madagascar North itinerary is perfect for a mixed group of travelers, some who want rigorous hiking versus those who want nice relaxing walks and downtime at the beach. Both activity levels can be accommodated within the same group on this itinerary. As an added bonus, once colonized by the French, the food in Madagascar is noteworthy as is the large variety of home-made flavored rum including litchi, vanilla and cinnamon.
