The Cape Point Nature Reserve is surprisingly big and can be explored either by hiking, driving or cycling. As a native Capetonian, I have driven through the reserve in a car but I was very keen to explore it by bicycle. We were picked up in Cape Town and while driving in the van (with the bikes on a trailer) were briefed on our itinerary for the day. Before heading to Cape Point, we had a cycle through Constantia’s Green Belt, which is also an area of great natural beauty and a good opportunity to get comfortable with our bikes. Before starting, the guides provide helmets and reflective jackets, adjust the bike saddles and explain the gears and brakes. Cycling through Cape Point was fantastic. I loved whizzing downhill, as well as pedaling through the flat areas, taking in the surrounding fynbos with hummingbirds flitting about and was pleasantly surprised to spot an ostrich just off the side of the road. I attempted the uphill road to the famous lighthouse but I found out am no tri-athlete! Luckily the van follows behind and I was able to jump back in for the last bit of the journey along with someone with the same level of fitness as me. After all this activity we enjoyed a delicious lunch in Simonstown’s harbour (not included) and stopped at Constantia Uitsig for some amazing craft ice cream. The guides are always checking in to see whether you are satisfied and if there is a particular area you want to see they are happy to oblige. I ended the day with a slightly sore bum and a very big smile.
