Elephant’s block our path in a tug-of-war

Elephants in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve.

In October 2010 I was guiding a private tour (put together by Jenman African Safaris) for the Schnor family from Germany.

We started in Jo’burg and worked our way through the Kruger, Swaziland and into Kwazulu Natal. We spent two days in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. During a game drive on day two, we met these two elephant, (twice on the same day).

They were pushing and tugging at each other and it looked like the one wanted to push the other over.
The problem came when the one started giving ground and moving backwards. Instead of moving into the bushes, they stayed on the road. As you can see in the pictures, the road is very narrow and making a U-turn in the Toyota Quantum on such a narrow track is not possible.
I ended up having to reverse over 500 meters before the elephants moved into the bushes and I could drive past.

Elephants in the roads

It was a very special sighting (much to the delight of the clients), but it became nerve wrecking when the one elephant walked towards us with a very determent stride. I snapped the one picture a second before I had to make a very hasty retreat!

Cheers, Dirk (Jenman Safaris Guide)
