Get up-close and personal with the spectacular fauna and flora of Damaraland during a safari to Namibia, including desert elephants and black rhinos. Wildlife to spot on safari in Damaraland
Bordered by Windhoek, the Kalahari Desert, the Namib Desert and Ovamboland, Damaraland is a unique Namibian attraction to witness whilst on safari. It contains some of the most scenic areas in the country, and a Namibian safari to Damaraland will bring tourists into the company of desert elephants, black rhinos, ostriches and springbok.
Damaraland also contains four well-known areas that should be included in your Namibia holiday plans. Brandberg is well known for bushman rock paintings while Twyfelfontein is a rocky mountain area filled with historic paintings dating back to 1000 AD. Spitzkoppe is an unusual mountain peak, thought to be a broken-apart volcano and the Petrified Forest dates back millions of years.
As one of Namibia’s last unofficial wildlife areas, Damaraland is unfenced, so animals can move freely outside the confines of parks and reserves. You can expect to spot gemsbok, kudu, springbok, Hartman’s mountain zebra, lion, cheetah, and spotted and brown hyena on your Namibia safari to Damaraland. Birding is also excellent with more than 240 species recorded, including violet wood-hoopoe, bare-cheeked babbler, rockrunner, white-tailed shrike and the majestic Verreaux’s eagle.
Activities and experiences in Damaraland
Damaraland is a must for nature-lovers on a vacation to Namibia as it will bring you up close to the spectacular fauna and flora of this African safari destination.
Include a visit to Twyfelfontein as it has one of the most extensive rock-art galleries in Africa. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with more than 2 500 engravings that will be of great interest to culture aficionados.
The granite peaks of Spitzkoppe are part of the Erongo Mountains in Damaraland and make for very impressive photographs on your Namibia safari. For those after a bit of adrenaline, beautiful day walks in and around the Spitzkoppe are encouraged.
Marvel at the Petrified Forest on your Namibia holiday to Damaraland. It is about 50 kilometres west of Khorixas and is an area of open veld scattered with petrified tree trunks estimated to be around 260 million years old. Additionally to the petrified tree trunks some beautiful specimens of the Welwitschia Mirabilis can be seen here. The plants are endemic to the Namib Desert and only consist of a root a small stem and two leaves.
