Two of our clients, Johnny and Peter, recently travelled to Madagascar and did a combined tour organized by our consultant Ruth! Their tailor-made combined adventures included the popular 1000 Views of Madagascar tour, the Southern Flamingo Package and Madagascar East Package. They shared some of their highlights as they journeyed across Madagascar with Jenman Madagascar Safaris…
“Madagascar is a very different place and we stayed very busy and in most respects it filled our expectation but what we did not expect was the impact the friendly Malagasy people left on us. The journey started when we arrived at the airport in Antananarivo, the weather was very pleasant and we were met by Fetra with a lovely smile which made us immediately feel at home and very special – he really was so much more than a driver.
In Tulear we stayed at Hotel De La Plage where all the accommodation was comfortable and foam mattresses were thick and very comfortable and a great welcome as the road to Ifaty is quite bumpy but very scenic. We also had the chance to visit the Baobab forest.
Rasoa at Safari Vezo was another winner. She was a fabulous hostess, and her support staff was great too. Their meals and beautiful restaurant and the whole ambience there was great. Tsinamapetsosa certainly did not disappoint us either; the plant life and baobabs were amazing and left us wishing we had more time there to enjoy it fully. The road to get there and back takes time and is full of birds and our driver Gino tried to accommodate us by finding birds and slowing down for us to look.
Zombitse between Isalo and Tulear was our best birding experience. The guide there was superb. He really went the extra mile though with his bird calls and found us the dearest sportive lemur hiding in a tree hole. We definitely recommend this part of the tour and it is really worth it especially for birders. Isalo was neat and relaxing with nice examples of plants, Roxy the park guide had a very broad knowledge of everything Isalo had to offer. Heading east, 72 year old Henrietta of Grace Lodge was a delight and highlight! The parks at Andasibe were a little bit disappointing but maybe we expected too much after reading what could possibly be seen there though admittedly the weather was a bit wet, we also got to see a mouse lemur on a night walk. Overall we realized nature is not always available on your demand….”
Palmarium was excellent with lovely accommodation but the best part was that you could walk and explore the forest a bit on one’s own without a guide as well. It was great for plant life which included palms, orchids, pitcher plants and we saw the most lemurs there too and a lovely big hog nose snake on our doorstep. The guides were very helpful in helping us identify what we found. Weather was good too and we highly recommend staying for at least 2 nights.
We also had some fun at St Marie and La Petit Traversee was pretty but it rained almost continuously so we were quite glad to get back to Antananarivo to dry things out. I was pleasantly surprised with Antananarivo, really fascinating place with lots of character. Fetra organized a trip to the Antananarivo Lemur Park with an informative guide on the morning of the day we left and it really rounded the trip off nicely as it summarized everything we had seen and diverted our mind from the fact that the adventure was almost over.
In a nutshell than we went with great expectations especially on the nature side – lemurs, chameleons with the baobabs especially at Tsinamapetsosa did not disappoint. I am not that big into people and culture but what will definitely linger though is probably the few humble sweet Malagasy folk we met, this was the unexpected pleasant surprise that we did not go to experience but proved a real treat and why I would recommend Madagascar. We also found ourselves tipping most of our spending money; we just did not have the heart not too.
Thanks Ruth for all your time and patience in assisting us with information and to get the best possible itinerary together. Please let your sister know we are glad she pointed us in this direction. We really hope we do get a chance to return one day”…
