Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the Park is over 27 500-hectares and runs from Yzerfontein to the Langebaan lagoon. With the West Coast flowers in bloom between August and October, it’s a firm favourite of travellers wishing to see the blankets of flowers in vibrant colours.

The main towns in the region are Saldanha Bay, Paternoster, Vredenburg, St. Helena Bay, Langebaan, Hopefield, Darling and Yzerfontein. Each with its own unique attractions and all offering a unique insight into life on the West Coast of South Africa.

Whilst on a South African safari with us, we like to give our guests a chance to visit these towns and witness the simplicity and beauty of life there. Saldanha Bay has its own natural harbour and is renowned as a hot spot for any water or fishing enthusiasts. Southern Right Whales can even be spotted from the harbour, making it a truly magnificent experience.

Paternoster is a small and underdeveloped fishing village. But don’t let that fool you! Dolphins and whales can be viewed from the beach here and the surrounding hills, making it a must for marine life lovers.

A visit to Langebaan is a unique thing, with its purely salt water lagoon – one of the very few in South Africa. This is a highlight for twitchers of all walks of life, boating over 300 species of birds in this part of the West Coast National Park.

And any trip to the West Coast during a South African safari with us, would not be complete without a visit to Darling, a small farming town that holds the annual flower festival and boasts one of the best displays of wild flowers in the entire West Coast area.

The West Coast is a truly spectacular attraction in the spring with its display of wild flowers drawing scores of tourists from all over the world. It’s carpets of colour spread across wide open plains are truly something to behold, and the many quaint towns dotted along the coast offer a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Cederberg Mountain range is also nearby, allowing active travellers to stretch their legs on a variety of hiking and walking trails.

Check out our range of South African safaris that include the West Coast, or read about some of the other attractions you can enjoy whilst on a South African safari with us.
