Welcome to 2011!

We are so excited that 2011 is here!! This year is going to be one of our most exciting years ever... One of our new years resolutions is to surprise you all year long - with our incredible & improved service levels, new products, a new website & a totally new product brochure (oops... did we just say that?) and much more. Don't forget to email us on info@jenmansafaris.com with any queries... Happy New Years!

Survey: How 'responsible' should our safari go?

For a couple of years now we have been looking into how to improve the responsible & eco-friendly aspect of our tours. We have been running our safaris in the way that it protects the environment and support the community by ensuring that we; use local produce, travel through National Parks & their conservations, hire local guides, empower local trade and much more. Now the Doomsday prophets have predicted that the world will come to an end in 2012. So surely, if 2011 is our last year, we should make it one to be remembered and start doing more.

But can we do more? 'Yes we can!' (Wow, we sound like Obama now!)

Our plan is to launch a few set departure dates for our popular Northern Experience safari (Cape Town to Victoria Falls), these specific safaris will include inspiring responsible activities and learning experiences, such as;

  1. Zimbabwe: Learn about the importance of anti-poaching and the effect it has with rhinos; spend some time in the bush tracking snares and learning about the endangered rhino; supporting the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit.
  2. Cape Town: Get involved with the kids and spend an afternoon at a school in Khayalitsha. Learn about worm farming, enjoy a yoga class with the kids or practice story telling - surely there is a story from your country that you can share with them. (supporting Earth Child)
  3. Namibia: this will be an activity in Swakopmund, we currently have a few options that we are still deciding between...

This is still work in progress but we appreciate your input. Please take a few minutes to answer our anonymous survey about this idea...

Next month we will release all the results! Watch this space....

Close picture encounters with elephants in Botswana... the norm?!

Joanne (our Operations assistant) and her husband recently went on our Botswana Wildlife Breakaway safari... They posted the below picture of Joanne and our guide, Blessed, on our facebook fan page. As you can see they were very close to some elephants which we thought was quite special and very unusual. We were all amazed that they could get so close without the elephants getting cross...

Well, we were amazed until....Katja (our Marketing Manager) and her fiancé posted a picture of themselves in Botswana with elephants in the background, also very close to the elephants and the elephants didn't seem cross either. Another amazing picture? Or is this maybe the norm in Botswana? Hmmm...

Climb Kilimanjaro...

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a fantastic and exhilarating experience ... something that is found on most peoples bucket list. But, now that it's actually cheaper then it was last year - why not take it off the bucket list and go?! We think that 2011 is definitely the year for the Kilimanjaro Challenge!

There are 2 routes that you can attempt when climbing to the summit; Machame and Maranagu. Each route will take you about 6 days to complete (ascend and descend) and will be, without a doubt, worth every step!

Last year you could go on either route for about USD 1780 per person (2 person rate)... this year the rate is even less at USD 1455 per person (2 person rate) or USD 1315 per person (4 person rate). This is a huge saving (over USD 300 per person) for 2011... Definitely time you take the Kilimanjaro Challenge off your bucket list ...

Luckily climbing Kilimanjaro can be done throughout the year however the most popular months are: January, February, July, August and September... Contact us for more information about this adventurous and 'once in a lifetime' challenge.

Meet Antoinette - our HR manager & secret karaoke singer

Antoinette is one of the treasured ladies behind the scenes; always working super hard to make us all happy, planning all our social events and basically doing all the admin that none of us can do. She has an infectious laugh and is always willing to go above & beyond our expectations... a great asset to the Jenman Team!

She loves the Garden Route and thinks (and we agree) that its one of the most beautiful & hidden routes in South Africa. She does have her eye on discovering the beaches of Mozambique... When she isn't travelling or planning her next trip you will find her on the stunning Melkbosstrand beach walking her beloved and somewhat hyper-active doggies... She loves the outdoors and thinks that relaxing at a braai (South African barbeque) with some friends is a great way to spend the day (and again, we totally agree!).

Something that you don't know about Antoinette... If you are brave enough to play a game against her then beware... she is super competitive and will do her 'best' to win. She also secretly loves to sing karaoke but even she admits that she might not have the best voice... Either way, Ant (as we call her) is a blast to be around, lots of fun and a great HR manager.

Zambia introduces security charge on departing flights

The National Airports Corporation Zambia has introduced a security charge payable at all NACL airports in Zambia (Lusaka, Livingstone, Ndola and Mfuwe), effective from the beginning of this month.

The new security charge is USD 3pp per sector (domestic flights) and for those in transit (he conditions are the same as those that apply to departure tax) and a USD 5 international security charge has also been implemented (Lusaka and Livingstone).

Tripadvisor Votes - food & wine destinations of the world

Tripadvisor (one of the most famous & popular online review directories) recently launched the top food and wine destinations in the world... as you can imagine the competition was fierce! The Western Cape (where we are based... yay!) came number 2. We beat the likes of Florence, Chicago, San Francisco, Siena and Melbourne (as well as many more).

This is what Tripadvisor had to say: "South Africa's most popular tourist destination offers the urban thrills of Cape Town, its adjacent wine country and an aura of the rich political history of South Africa. The Overberg's perfect whale-watching perches provide excitement of a different nature. The Garden Route's lakes and forests and the Klein Karoo's ostrich-farming towns and vineyards present another take on the Cape. For extra kicks, try bungee jumping or cage-diving among Great Whites."

According to Tripadvisor you don't want to miss:
Wine Desk Waterfront
Santa Rosa Island
Tsiba Tsiba Wine Tours

If you would like to see who else made it into the top 10 then click here... Otherwise, see you soon for some great food & wine in the Western Cape: info@jenmansafaris.com
