Chizarira Area Zimbabwe

ZIMBABWE SAFARIS AND CHIZARIRA:
Chizarira National Park is situated in Northern Zimbabwe. It is one of the largest nature reserves in Zimbabwe, but one of the least known, because of its geographical isolation on the Zambezi Escarpment. The Chizarira Conservation Area has the Chizarira National Park at its core. At 2,000 square kilometres (490,000 acres), Chizarira National Park has good wildlife populations and some majestic scenery. Chizarira is a large remote area of wild, untouched flora and fauna, and is endowed with magnificent plateaus, gorges and flood plains. Because of its wild and remote nature, the tranquillity and rugged beauty of Chizarira National Park is unequalled.
Travellers who seek wilderness and solitude will love Chizarira; there are few visitors, no tarred roads, no accommodation (other than basic campsites) but amazing views, good wildlife and incredible birdlife. Nearly 400 bird species have been recorded within the Chizarira National Park. The Big Five birds of the area include: the African Broadbill, Livingstone’s Flycatcher, Yellow-spotted Nicator, Emerald Cuckoo and the rare and elusive Angola Pitta. Chizarira is also home to the Taita Falcon which makes its nests within the Park.
Chizarira also contains a full spectrum of large mammals, such as elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo. Other game includes cheetah, zebra and a range of antelope including sable, common waterbuck, kudu, bushbuck, klipspringer and steenbok. The lakeshore areas in Chizarira support some spectacular crocodile populations as well.
The game is widely distributed throughout Chizarira and viewing can be difficult due to the tall grass. The appeal of Chizarira lies instead in its total remoteness and the opportunity to experience Africa in its original form. The Park is known for its excellent game walking and the best way to enjoy the flora and fauna is to walk along the elephant tracks and mountain trails with a professional guide. Although it is open year round, the rainy season renders some areas inaccessible, and the best time to visit is between April and November.
