The ‘Victoria & Alfred Waterfront’ is favourably located between Table Mountain and Robben Island, giving travellers breath-taking views of both of these well-known places. This Cape Town harbour is still a working dock with oil rigs, tug boats, luxury cruisers and extravagant yachts. If you are really lucky you might be able to walk aboard one of the luxury cruises that are docked. The Waterfront is an exciting shopping centre with luxury accommodation, interesting office blocks as well as fantastic restaurants for all tastes and cuisines….  

The construction of the harbour was initiated by Prince Alfred (son of Queen Victoria)… the first basin was named after himself and the second basin was named after his mother; and this is simply how the waterfront derived its name – the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. The harbour construction took place between 1860 and 1920 and to this day construction is still being done to the harbour and its surrounding aesthetic buildings.

There is a wide variety of fun activities that one can enjoy at the harbour, such as; seal watching (they come incredibly close near the old Berties Landing), Two Oceans Aquarium, maritime museum (history of shipping from prehistoric times to present day), boat trips around the harbour, Robben Island ferry trips, helicopter rides and monthly events ranging from the circus to exhibitions and food fairs. The clock tower is also a fascinating building as it used to be the original Port Captains office which was completed in 1882. The tower gave him a great vantage point to view all the activities in the harbour and monitor the tide.

The 2 Oceans Aquarium is extremely popular and contains a great selection of marine life including sharks, penguins, turtles and over 3000 living sea animals. It’s called the Two Oceans Aquarium because the aquarium contains sea life from both the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. It’s a great educational trip for the whole family and the aquarium includes an activity centre, a touch pool, diversity hall (exhibitions) and a predator tank! Not only will the whole family learn a lot but they will also have a great time… you can also find curio shops and restaurants which guarantee that you will have a fabulous time.
