Sun City was developed many years ago by business tycoon Sol Kerzner as part of the Sun International group of properties. It was officially opened in December of 1979 during the Apartheid era. During this era the Bophuthatswana region (where Sun City was developed) was declared as an independent state… this allowed the area to provide ‘entertainment’ including gambling and topless revenue shows. This made Sun City one of the most popular holiday destinations in South Africa. Sun City has hosted many popular international singers, bands and presenters at the Sun City Super Bowl. This has attracted travellers from near and far.

Sun City is known as being one of the world’s most exotic and extravagant holiday resorts and is an all year round holiday paradise! There are a variety of activities that can be enjoyed in here, such as; entertainment shows, gambling, swimming, spa treatments, paragliding, golfing, cultural tours at Motseng and safaris in the Pilanesberg National Park. Sun City boasts two world class golf courses; the Gary Player Country Golf Course and the Lost City Golf Course. The themed water park in Sun City is called the ‘Valley of the Waves’ and has an artificial beach that makes use of mechanically generated waves!

The Sun City and its adjoining area boasts a magnitude of safari animals including; the big five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant), springbok, brown hyena, impala, numerous bird species, blackeyed bulbul, vervet monkey, zebra, wild dog, hyena and much more.

There is something for everyone at Sun City from day time activities suited for the whole family to night time activities including glitzy restaurants, casinos and shows! Sun City has a temperate climate with dry, warm days and cold nights in winter and hot days in summer. If you are looking for the optimal time in the year to travel (even though it’s good all year round), we recommend the months between November and March.
