Namibia comprises of 26 different National Parks, each National Park contains a wide variety of extraordinary African animals. The most popular National Park in Namibia is the Etosha National Park which boasts an impressive population of 114 different mammals all in one park! In many Namibian areas you can see elephants, leopards, lions and giraffes to name a few – which makes Namibia an extremely popular African safari destination.
The desert elephant in Namibia is a popular safari highlight as many travellers want to see these magnificent animals and observe how they have adapted to the desert terrain. The desert elephants are famous as they can survive in the arid environment by feeding off trees, bushes and patches of grass found sparsely scattered around. You can normally spot them around the Ephemeral Rivers and they can even last 4 days without water. They walk further then most African elephants and sometimes have to walk 60km between waterholes. They are magnificent animals and are wonderful Namibia safari highlight.
Namibia has 8 mammal species that are endemic to the area, they are; gerbils, mice, bats and the black faced impala. A big part of Namibia is made up of Namib Desert where one can find many dune dwellers amongst the golden sand - there are 30 endemic lizard species found here.
The Waterberg Plateau is a park that is dedicated for research and is a breeding ground for some of the endangered Namibia animals. Animals found in the Waterberg Plateau include; tsessebe, roan and sable antelope. This plateau also contains a small population of the white rhino which is on the endangered list for Africa. There is also a seal park called the Cape Cross Seal Reserve which is about 60km2 of area and contains an ever growing population of seals - about 80 000 to 100 000 seals at any given time are found here.
