Khama Rhino Sanctuary Botswana Safaris

OUR BOTSWANA SAFARIS AND THE KHAMA RHINO SANCTUARY:
Come to the Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Botswana to view these awesome creatures in the wild! The Khama Rhino Sanctuary is an important facility that looks after the threatened rhinos, and offers a worthy excursion on any Botswana safari. This sanctuary trust was established to help save the black and white Rhinos from extinction and abuse. The trust was started by a group of Serowe residents whose aim is to help these animals while setting up a wildlife reserve, which relies on donations to fund and sustain the project. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Botswana was started in 1992 and was implemented to provide benefits to the local community through tourism and the natural resources – by visiting this area on a Botswana Safari you can help contribute to this worthwhile project!
The Rhino Sanctuary in Botswana derived its name from Serestse Khama who was accredited for the independence (1965) and non-racial constitution for Botswana. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary project started when a little boy wanted to know why they had to travel such far distances to see the wildlife. His father agreed that the animals should be where they belong and thus promoted the formation of the Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust.
The Botswana Rhino Sanctuary was setup in one of the best areas of Botswana, in order to provide the most optimal conditions for the habitation and preservation of Rhinos. It is close to the Botswana Defense Force, allowing for 24 hour protection from poachers. This project has provided many jobs for the local community and has taught the ‘locals’ more about these wonderful animals. So far, this project has been a great success in helping the White Rhinos' and the Black Rhinos’ survival rate – visiting this area on a Botswana Safari can help the rhino cause. Many other animals share the Rhino Sanctuary reserve with these animals, such as: Red Hartebeest, Wild Cat, Lynx, Brown Hyena, Leopard, Jackal, Antelope, and Zebra… But the main focus of this reserve is to ensure the conservation of the Rhinos.
The Botswana Khama Rhino Sanctuary project has grown successfully and initially began with the transfer and relocation of 14 White Rhinos and 2 Black Rhinos. Some of these animals arrived injured by poachers and hunters. Over the past years, more Rhino’s have been relocated (mainly from areas in Botswana) to this sanctuary making the total around 34 (a few of them been bred and born there) – they all roam freely in a secure and preserved area. The exceptional Botswana wildlife is the best reason to take a Botswana safari, and the Khama Rhino Sanctuary is making a huge difference. We are pleased to take visitors to Khama and assist to keep the project going. Visit this sanctuary on a Botswana Safari to help support the cause.
