Gemsbok Area Botswana Safaris

OUR BOTSWANA SAFARIS AND THE GEMSBOK NATIONAL PARK:

The Gemsbok area in Botswana is commonly known as the Gemsbok National Park. This National Park is ideal for Botswana Safaris as the wildlife is in abundance there - offering you magnificent photo opportunities. The Gemsbok National Park was established in 1931 with the aim of protecting the migrating game; especially the Gemsbok. At this time the Gemsbok population was suffering immensely from poaching – the National Park Project has helped to protect them. Visiting this area on a Botswana Safari can help the conservation continue. The total area of the Gemsbok region is about 38 000km2 with 75% of the area lying in Botswana and the remainder in South Africa.

The Gemsbok National Park is part of the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park - these two parks are separated by the Nossob River which is a dry bed. There are no physical boundaries between these Parks (besides the international border line) and thus they are treated as one ecological unit. The Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana forms Africa’s first Transfrontier Park. This allows for the seasonal migration of the wildlife in this area as they search for water… and allows the animals and predators to roam freely. This area has become a popular Botswana Safari destination. This area is a semi-dessert region but still manages to support about 19 species of predators as well as about 200 bird species.

Most of the wildlife concentrates around the river areas for water. You will see most of the wildlife around the Nossob and Auob Rivers which runs through these parks and meets at the Twee River. The best time to visit this area is between April and August (winter), where the days are mild and sunny. In summer the temperatures reach and exceed 40°C! The Gemsbok National Park allows you to view many different animals on a Botswana safari, such as: Lions, Leopards, Wild Dogs, Cheetahs, Springboks, Gemsbok, Wildebeests, Brown and Spotted Hynaes, Eland and other Antelopes.

Animals can roam freely these two Gemsbok National Parks. Tourists will need a permit to visit and explore the Botswana National Park on safari. This area is also a Malaria zone, so remember to check out more information about this park before you venture there on a Botswana Safari.
