Foz do Cunene Angola Safaris

Foz do Cunene is a large perennial river that forms part of a boundary between Namibia and Angola. The settlement of Foz do Cunene is situated at the banks of the river 6m from the sea.  The settlement was originally built to accommodate the operators at the water pumping station which supplied the fishing town on the peninsula of Baia dos Tigres. The sea eventually broke through, severing the water line and creating an island of Tigres. The town and pump station were thus abandoned and the desert is slowly reclaiming the land.

The lush vegetation that surrounds Foz do Cunene, where the river bisects the desert before entering the sea, provides a delightful contrast with the expansive desert.  Visitors to this area will experience the contrasts of sand dunes, rocky plains, thick riverine vegetation, salt marshes and the ocean. The Foz do Cunene area is also known for its huge sand dunes, which fall precipitously into the sea, where there are vast shallow lagoons that abound with bird and other marine life. Fishing at Foz do Cunene is very popular, and worth the long drive through the Namib Desert and Iona National Park.

The scenery through the Foz do Cunene region is spectacular.  The drive towards the coast through the sandy desert provides an austere but spectacular landscape that few tourists have travelled through before.  The inland route provides magnificent wildlife and birdlife, plains littered with Welwitchias, and fascinating rock formations on the banks of a freshwater oasis. . The scenery changes from rocky landscape to thick riverine vegetation to sand dunes en route, providing a magnificent journey of contrasts. The breathtaking Leba pass near Foz do Cunene is known for its waterfall and amazingly steep and winding road ascending from the coastal plain to an altitude of over 6000 feet in just a few kilometres.  But perhaps most notably, visitors will encounter the indigenous Himba people throughout this area; a tribe of herders who anthropologists say are the most culturally intact on the African continent.
